Rabbi Neil Comess-Daniels has been writing melodies, playing his guitar and singing with the voice of an angel since his high school days - when he had to choose between playing with his rock ‘n’ roll band at the Hollywood Bowl, or making it on time to Camp Swig to fulfill his song leader duties. We are glad he chose Judaism and brought his music along with him!
Over the years, Rabbi Neil’s melodies have become staples of the Beth Shir Shalom liturgy, along with many contemporary settings of prayers, psalms, and poetry, reimagined by the many talented musicians of Beth Shir Shalom including the all-member band, the TishTones and the BSS choir.
The TishTones began in the early 1990’s when Rabbi Neil Comess-Daniels set our Shabbat evening service around a table in the shul’s social hall for a celebration weaving together music, prayer, study, dance, meditative moments and poetic expression. In the beginning, two or three musicians joined Rabbi Neil on guitar, violin and piano. Over the years, the band has grown in size and repertoire, featuring new pieces from composers in the band and using our “ten thousand opinions” to create original arrangements drawn from our rich tradition of Jewish music. The band has produced two CD’s to date, can be heard and seen on youTube and of course, at a Friday night Shabbos Tish.
The choir at Beth Shir Shalom is an ensemble that enriches the spirits of the members as well as well as the listeners. We don't just learn music. We discuss the intention and meaning of the words we sing. The choir has a unique presence at all of the High Holy Days services, at Martin Luther King celebrations and at other events throughout the year. We also perform a concert every spring that features Jewish music as well as other pieces that refelct themes of love, spirit and goodness. Singers of all levels are welcome to join. the choir rehearses on Wednessday evenings.
In addition to the TishTones, the members of the Beth Shir Shalom choir bring their amazing harmonies and blends to special Shabbat evenings and the High Holy Days celebrations.
And of course, the music is in our name Beth SHIR Shalom..the Home of the SONG of Peace. When we all raise our voices together we make the world a better place.
